Milled precision at a price that makes the competition nervous.
The Big Picture
The Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1 is the classic Anser-style blade in Cleveland's value-oriented Huntington Beach lineup. What makes it noteworthy is the manufacturing approach: Cleveland casts the head first, then precision-mills the face and body to achieve the sharp lines, crisp contours, and consistent performance you would normally only find in fully milled putters at twice the price. The standard model retails for $199.99, which positions it directly against the entry-level offerings from Odyssey, Ping, and TaylorMade -- but with a milled finish that looks and feels considerably more premium.

The HB Soft Milled 1 features Cleveland's Speed Optimized Face Technology (SOFT), a variable milling pattern designed to normalize ball speed on off-center strikes. An optional UST ALL-IN composite putter shaft adds another layer of performance customization for an extra $50. With ten models in the full lineup covering both slight-arc and straight-back/straight-through stroke types, there is a head shape for virtually every putting style. The Model 1, with its plumber's neck hosel and moderate toe hang, is designed for players with a slight arc.
At Address
The Model 1 is a clean, traditional Anser-style blade that looks sharp at address. The cast-then-milled process pays dividends here -- the lines are crisp, the edges are precise, and the overall appearance is far more refined than the previous-generation cast Cleveland putters that frankly looked like department store products regardless of how well they performed.
A simple, low-contrast single sight line on the back cavity provides alignment assistance without clutter. This minimalist approach suits the blade aesthetic well. The satin finish reduces glare effectively, and the milling marks on the back of the head add visual texture that reinforces the premium feel. Looking down at address, the head weight of 345 grams feels well-matched to the compact profile.
The plumber's neck hosel provides moderate toe hang, which naturally suits a putting stroke with a slight arc. The Golf Pride PRO ONLY Red Star grip comes stock on this model, featuring a pistol shape designed to help your hands turn the putter over through the stroke -- a thoughtful pairing for an arc-stroke putter.
Sound & Feel
The SOFT face milling is the defining characteristic of the HB Soft Milled 1's feel. By using an intricate network of milled grooves that vary in depth and spacing across the face, Cleveland has created a surface that feels soft and responsive without the use of an insert. Center strikes produce a pleasing, slightly muted impact that transmits clear feedback up through the shaft. You know immediately where you caught it.

With the standard stepless chrome steel shaft, the feel is classic and familiar -- solid without any vibration or harshness. Upgrade to the UST ALL-IN composite shaft and the sensation changes noticeably. The ALL-IN is 26 percent stiffer than a standard putter shaft with 38 percent higher frequency and 24 percent less torque, which translates to feedback that arrives at your hands faster and with more clarity. It takes a few putts to adjust to the increased stiffness, but the improvement in control is tangible. Cleveland claims 10 percent more consistent face angle at impact with the ALL-IN shaft, and while I cannot verify that number precisely, the putter did feel more stable through the stroke.
The sound is impressively refined for a sub-$200 putter. It avoids the hollow, tinny quality that plagues many budget blades and instead delivers a muted thud that would not be out of place on a putter costing twice as much.
Performance
Distance Control
The SOFT face technology does exactly what Cleveland says it does. On putts where I caught the ball toward the toe or heel -- the kind of slight mishits that happen to every golfer multiple times per round -- the ball speed held up better than it does on a flat-milled face. From 20 feet, my mishits consistently reached the vicinity of the hole rather than dying two or three feet short. Over 18 holes, that kind of consistency adds up.
The ALL-IN shaft option amplifies this effect. The reduced torque means the face stays squarer through impact, which improves not just direction but also the consistency of energy transfer. If you are going to invest in the HB Soft Milled 1, the extra $50 for the ALL-IN shaft is money well spent.
Stability & Stroke Consistency
A blade putter will never match a mallet for raw MOI. That is physics. But the HB Soft Milled 1 does what it can within the constraints of a compact head shape. The plumber's neck and moderate toe hang work naturally with an arcing stroke, and the head feels stable through the hitting zone. On short putts from three to six feet, the putter tracked consistently on my intended line.
Cleveland does not offer a formal fitting program, but the range of models and configurations in the HB Soft Milled lineup makes self-fitting reasonably straightforward. Know your stroke type, choose your corresponding model and grip, and you will be close to optimized.
Verdict
The Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1 is the rare budget putter that does not feel like a compromise. The milled finish looks premium, the SOFT face technology improves distance control on mishits, and the optional ALL-IN shaft adds meaningful performance value. The feel is soft and responsive, the sound is refined, and the overall build quality exceeds expectations for the price.
The trade-off is that this is still a cast-then-milled putter, not a fully milled one. Purists who obsess over manufacturing pedigree will notice the difference if they look closely. And while the Model 1 is a solid blade, it is not doing anything revolutionary -- it is simply executing the fundamentals well at a great price.
For golfers who want a quality blade putter with real technology and a milled aesthetic without paying $400 or more, the HB Soft Milled 1 is one of the smartest buys in golf.
