A low-spin distance machine wrapped in the stealthiest fairway wood design of 2024 -- and now available at a price that makes it almost impossible to ignore.
The Big Picture
Cobra has been quietly building a reputation for producing some of the best fairway woods in the game, and the Darkspeed X is the club that might finally get the rest of the golf world to pay attention. Sitting in the middle of the three-model Darkspeed lineup -- between the low-spin LS and the max-forgiveness Max -- the X is designed to be the do-everything fairway wood that fits the widest range of golfers.
The Darkspeed X builds on the foundation laid by the AeroJet series with a handful of meaningful upgrades. The headline technology is the AI-designed H.O.T. Face, which uses machine learning to map 15 individual hot spots across the clubface with an optimized variable thickness pattern. The goal is more efficient energy transfer on every strike, not just the perfect ones. Behind the face, Cobra's re-engineered PWR-Bridge structure works in concert with the PWRSHELL insert to create a more flexible face-and-sole system that maximizes launch and ball speed while keeping spin in check.
A lightweight carbon crown pulls weight out of the upper portion of the head and repositions it low and back, dropping the center of gravity for a more penetrating ball flight. An 8-gram weight in the rear of the sole adds stability and promotes carry distance. The result is a fairway wood that prioritizes speed and distance without completely abandoning forgiveness -- a balance Cobra has been chasing for years.
Originally retailing at $329, the Darkspeed X can now be found in the $199 range with the newer DS Adapt line occupying the premium shelf. At that price, it becomes one of the most compelling fairway wood values available.
At Address
This is one of the best-looking fairway woods I have seen in recent years. The fully blacked-out matte carbon crown is clean, understated, and free of distracting graphics or bright accent colors. Cobra resisted the urge to splash their usual bold colorway across the crown, and the restraint pays off. The only visual element up top is the small Cobra logo that doubles as an alignment cue, though its dark-on-dark placement can be a touch difficult to pick up in certain lighting conditions.
Clean matte black crown view at address position
The head shape is traditional and well-proportioned with a fairly deep profile that sits flush to the ground at address. It squares up naturally behind the ball, and despite having a standard 15 degrees of loft on the 3-wood, it presents a relatively strong appearance that inspires confidence. The sole features blue accent detailing consistent with the Darkspeed X driver, but none of that is visible at address. From the playing position, it is all business -- dark, sleek, and purposeful. The turf interaction is clean and smooth through impact, and the overall look inspires you to make an aggressive swing at it.
Sound & Feel
Impact feel is outstanding on center strikes. There is a solid, crunching sensation at contact that communicates power without being harsh. The carbon crown contributes to a sound profile that is satisfying and confident -- not the hollow metallic ping of older fairway woods, but a more refined, slightly muted crack that tells you the ball is leaving the face with authority.
Off-center hits still provide clear feedback. You know when you have caught one thin or toward the toe, but the sensation is not punishing. The face feels powerful even on less-than-perfect strikes, and that consistent tactile response builds trust over time. When you flush one from the sweet spot, there are few fairway woods in this generation that feel better.
Performance
Ball Speed & Distance
This is where the Darkspeed X makes its strongest case. In independent testing, it ranked second overall for distance among all 2024 fairway woods -- a remarkable result given the level of competition in this category. The combination of the PWRSHELL insert, AI-designed face, and low-forward CG produces ball speeds that consistently compete with the longest fairway woods on the market.
H.O.T. Face technology with precision milled grooves
In my testing with the 5-wood lofted down to 17 degrees, I recorded ball speeds of 135 to 137 mph with a club speed around 97 mph, producing a smash factor of 1.41. Carry distances settled around 222 to 225 yards with total distances reaching 242 to 246 yards. Off the tee, those numbers jumped by roughly 5 yards. Higher swing speed players saw even more impressive results, with ball speeds climbing past 150 mph and carry distances pushing toward 250 yards with the 3-wood.
The consistency of ball speed across the face is a genuine strength. Even on shots I did not catch cleanly -- a bit low on the face or slightly toward the toe -- the distance penalty was manageable. A poorly struck shot might cost 15 to 20 yards of carry rather than the 30-plus you might lose with a less forgiving design. For a fairway wood that prioritizes low spin and distance, retaining that level of speed consistency on mishits is impressive.
Launch & Spin
The spin profile is decisively low. This is a fairway wood built to produce a strong, penetrating ball flight that maximizes carry and rollout rather than a towering trajectory that drops softly. Spin rates in the 2,500 to 3,000 rpm range were typical on well-struck shots, with numbers occasionally dipping below 2,500 on pure center-face contact.
Launch angle varied depending on configuration and strike location, but the Darkspeed X generally produced a mid launch that paired well with that low spin to create an efficient, boring flight. The stock UST Mamiya LIN-Q M40X shaft is available in both a red (mid-high launch, mid spin) and blue (mid launch, mid spin) version, giving you some ability to tune trajectory right out of the box.
One caveat for slower swing speed players: the low-spin characteristics that make this club a distance weapon for moderate-to-fast swingers can work against golfers who need more spin to keep the ball airborne. If your swing speed is on the slower side, you may struggle to achieve optimal carry and would be better served by the Darkspeed Max or a higher-spinning alternative.
Dispersion & Shot Shape
The Darkspeed X plays relatively neutral in its standard configuration, but there is a slight draw tendency that most golfers will appreciate. The MyFly adjustable hosel offers eight settings ranging from -1.5 degrees to +1.5 degrees, including dedicated draw positions at standard, -1 degree, and +1 degree. That level of adjustability in a fairway wood is genuinely useful for dialing in the right combination of loft and shot shape.
Sole weight ports and PWR Bridge structure with blue X accent
Forgiveness is good for a low-spin fairway wood, though it does not lead the category. The 8-gram back weight helps stabilize the head on off-center contact, and the AI-mapped face does its part to preserve ball speed across the hitting area. I found the club remarkably easy to hit with a strong, repeatable ball flight. Mishits that caught the toe or came in slightly thin still produced playable results with reasonable accuracy.
That said, if maximum forgiveness is your top priority, the Darkspeed X sits in the middle of the pack rather than at the top. It gives up some correction ability in exchange for its distance and workability advantages. Golfers who spray fairway woods all over the map may find more help in the Darkspeed Max or competing models designed explicitly for game improvement.
Verdict
The Cobra Darkspeed X is a fairway wood that gets the fundamentals right. It produces elite distance through a combination of low spin, efficient ball speed, and a penetrating flight that carries and rolls. The all-black aesthetic is among the best in the business. The adjustable hosel provides genuine tunability. And the feel at impact is satisfying on both pure strikes and moderate mishits.
Strengths: exceptional distance that ranks among the very best in its class, outstanding looks and address confidence, strong ball speed consistency across the face, meaningful adjustability through the MyFly hosel, and excellent value at its current discounted price.
Weaknesses: the low-spin profile is not ideal for slower swing speed players who need help getting the ball airborne, the all-black crown can make the alignment cue difficult to see, and forgiveness -- while good -- does not quite match the most forgiving models in the category.
The Darkspeed X is best suited for low-to-mid handicap golfers with moderate to fast swing speeds who want a fairway wood that maximizes distance without sacrificing forgiveness. At its current street price around $199, it delivers performance that competes with fairway woods costing significantly more.
