The travel bag that makes dragging 50 pounds through an airport feel almost effortless.
The Big Picture
If you travel with golf clubs more than once or twice a year, you already know the drill: lug a heavy, awkward soft case through the airport, fight to keep it balanced on two wheels, and pray the baggage handlers treat your investment with some degree of care. The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian exists to solve the first two problems and mitigate the third.

The ClubGlider's defining feature is a retractable leg system with pivoting caster wheels that, when deployed, transforms a standard two-wheeled golf travel bag into a four-wheeled, free-rolling carrier that you can literally push with two fingers. It sounds like marketing hyperbole, but it is not. The difference between pulling a loaded 45-pound bag on two wheels versus gliding it on four is night and day. Golf Digest awarded the Meridian its Editors' Choice for best travel cover from 2016 through 2023, and the bag continues to earn that distinction.
At $339, the Meridian is not cheap. But when you consider that you are protecting thousands of dollars worth of equipment and dramatically improving the travel experience, the math works out quickly โ especially for golfers who fly to play regularly.
At Address
The Meridian is a well-proportioned travel bag that stands roughly 54 inches tall and weighs approximately 11 pounds empty. It comes in several colorways, including all-black, navy/black, green/black, and a navy/white/red option that makes the bag easy to spot on a baggage carousel. The ballistic-style nylon construction looks and feels durable, with reinforced stitching at stress points and robust hardware throughout.
The padding at the top of the bag is immediately noticeable and reassuring. Dense foam runs through the entire top section where your club heads rest, providing a level of protection that gives genuine peace of mind when surrendering the bag to airline personnel. The bottom features a molded tray that supports the club shafts and serves as the housing for the retractable leg mechanism.
Exterior features include two access pockets on the sides, sized for golf shoes, with enough room to fit a pair of size 12 shoes โ one shoe per pocket. If you need to travel with two pairs of shoes, you will need to put the second pair inside the main compartment, which is a minor inconvenience but not a dealbreaker. The buckle closures on the outside are industrial-quality and feel like they will last indefinitely.
Performance
Mobility & The ClubGlider System
This is the feature that justifies the price. Pull down on the handle, and the retractable legs snap out with a satisfying pneumatic action. The pivoting caster wheels engage, and suddenly you are pushing or pulling a loaded golf bag with almost no effort. The bag tracks straight, pivots on a dime, and follows you through airport terminals, hotel lobbies, and parking lots with a smoothness that has to be experienced to be believed.
I have used the Meridian on multiple flights now, and the ClubGlider system genuinely changes the travel experience. When retracting the legs, the mechanism snaps back with some force, so keeping your fingers clear of the hinge points is important. Once you develop the habit of holding the handle at the center and releasing, it becomes second nature. The legs retract completely flat into the molded tray, adding no bulk to the bag's footprint for storage or checking.
One thing worth noting: people will talk to you about this bag at the airport. Constantly. If you are not in the mood for conversation, be prepared for comments, questions, and envious looks from golfers dragging standard bags behind them.
Protection
The dense foam padding at the top of the Meridian is the primary protection feature, and it does its job well. I have traveled with drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids without removing the heads, using a stiff arm for shaft protection, and have experienced zero damage across all trips. The padding absorbs impact effectively, and the overall structure of the bag keeps clubs from shifting excessively during transit.
The heavy-duty two-way zippers run the full length of the bag for easy loading and unloading. The zipper quality is good โ smooth and reliable โ though it does not feel quite as bomb-proof as some competing brands. For the vast majority of golfers traveling a reasonable number of times per year, the zippers will hold up without issue.
Interior straps secure your golf bag in place once loaded, preventing the bag from shifting inside the travel cover during handling. A longer strap wraps around the handle or body of your bag, while a shorter strap cinches lower. Together, they keep everything tight and stable.
Storage & Packing
The Meridian accommodates both stand bags and cart bags comfortably. With a stand bag loaded, there is ample room remaining for a rain suit, a dozen golf balls, an extra pair of shoes, a couple of sweatshirts, and miscellaneous accessories. The interior is spacious enough that you can legitimately use the travel bag as supplementary luggage, packing clothes and gear around your clubs to save on checked bag fees.
Interior lining with motivational text pattern
I was able to keep total weight under 50 pounds with a full set of clubs, a stand bag, shoes, rain gear, balls, and a change of clothes โ right at the airline limit for standard checked luggage. The two exterior shoe pockets provide additional storage without eating into the main compartment space.

Verdict
The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian is, quite simply, the best golf travel bag I have used. The retractable leg and caster wheel system is a genuine innovation that makes airport travel with golf clubs dramatically easier. The protection is excellent, the build quality is strong, and the storage capacity is generous enough to function as quasi-luggage for shorter trips.
The weaknesses are few but worth mentioning. At 11 pounds empty, the ClubGlider system adds weight that can eat into your airline baggage allowance. The exterior shoe pockets are adequate but not oversized, and golfers with larger feet may find them tight with two shoes per side. The handle grip, while functional, could benefit from thicker padding for a more premium feel in hand.
For golfers who fly to play with any regularity, the Meridian is an investment that pays for itself in reduced frustration and improved club protection. The average expert rating of 9.9 out of 10 across professional reviews is warranted. This bag makes you actually look forward to traveling with your clubs, which is something I never thought I would say.
