A premium spikeless shoe built for walkers who demand durability, waterproofing, and comfort over eight miles of hilly terrain, wrapped in a style that is as bold as it is polarizing.

The Big Picture

The Ecco Biom H5 is the fifth generation of Ecco's flagship spikeless golf shoe, and it arrives with a clear identity. This is a walking shoe for golfers who take their footwear as seriously as their equipment. Built around Ecco's BIOM Natural Motion technology, an anatomical last designed to mirror the natural contours of the foot, the H5 combines a full-grain performance leather upper, Ecco's proprietary ECCO-TEX waterproof membrane, a seamless knit sock construction replacing the traditional tongue, and one of the most visually distinctive outsoles in golf.

The H5 takes design cues from Ecco's hiking heritage, and that is both its greatest strength and its most divisive feature. The rugged, mountainous terrain molded into the outsole is inspired by the Scottish Highlands, and it gives the shoe an unmistakable look that people either find very cool or very strange. There is no middle ground. Functionally, however, the H5 is built to be walked hard, played in any weather, and last for years. With a 3-year waterproof warranty, the longest I have seen from any golf shoe manufacturer, Ecco clearly expects this shoe to outlast most of the competition.

The Biom H5 is available in leather and textile upper options, with both lace and BOA closure systems. Pricing sits in the premium bracket above $200, which is steep for a golf shoe but more palatable when you factor in the durability and that warranty.

First Impressions & Looks

The defining visual element of the Biom H5 is the waterproof membrane that wraps around the lower portion of the shoe, transitioning from outsole to upper in a textured, rock-like surface. It looks like cracked ice or mountain terrain, depending on which colorway you choose, and it eliminates the bottom seam entirely. That is a functional design choice that means you can stand in a few inches of water without anything seeping through, but it also creates a distinctive aesthetic that is going to divide opinion.

I think it looks great. The rugged, utilitarian personality fits the brand's identity as the company that championed spikeless golf shoes and has always been willing to experiment. The grey with white membrane and orange outsole has an outdoor-adventure vibe that appeals to golfers who also hike. The all-white with blue sole is more traditionally clean. The darker charcoal with black membrane is the most understated option.

That said, this is not a shoe designed to win beauty contests. The wider upper gives it a substantial look, and the overall profile is clearly function-first. If you are the kind of golfer who coordinates your shoes with your outfit and wants something sleek and fashion-forward, the Biom H5 probably is not your shoe. If you want something that says "I walk courses and I do not care about rain," it is perfect.

Comfort & Fit

The comfort story with the Biom H5 is, for the most part, excellent. Ecco's reputation for step-in comfort holds up here. The seamless knit sock construction eliminates the traditional tongue, which removes a common source of pressure and bunching at the top of the foot. The leather upper is supple and gives a secure, glove-like fit before you even lace up.

The arch support is pronounced and immediately noticeable. If you are someone who values that, you will love this shoe from the first step. The footbed feels excellent, the shoe is breathable despite being waterproof, and the overall weight is impressively light for how substantial the shoe appears. I wore the Biom H5 for a full 18-hole walk over hilly terrain on the first outing and my feet felt great throughout.

The fit runs true to Ecco's EU sizing. I would recommend trying them on if possible, as Ecco sizes can convert slightly differently than standard US half sizes. The shoe wraps around the contours of your feet in a way that eliminates internal movement; there is no sliding or slippage once laced. Width-wise, the shoe is accommodating but not overly roomy.

One honest note on break-in: while Ecco guarantees no break-in period and most golfers will have zero issues, I did experience some initial friction around the heel that took a round to settle. This is likely specific to individual foot shape, and the vast majority of people will have no such issue. After that first round, the heel area was completely comfortable and the shoe moved to the top of my rotation.

Performance

Stability & Support

The Biom H5 provides excellent ground feel and stability through a combination of the BIOM Natural Motion last, which positions the foot lower and more naturally, and the outsole design that distributes weight across a wide footprint. During the swing, the shoe feels stable without being rigid. There is enough flexibility in the forefoot for a natural weight transfer, and the wider platform resists lateral movement during aggressive swings.

The feel is closer to the ground than many golf shoes, which I find beneficial for feedback during the swing. You can feel the turf conditions through the sole, and that connection translates to better awareness of your footing on slopes and uneven lies. The shoe is not as aggressively performance-oriented in its stability platform as something like the FootJoy HyperFlex, but for a spikeless shoe, the ground engagement is very good.

Traction & Grip

Ecco dialed back the outsole aggressiveness slightly from the Biom H4, which had one of the most aggressive spikeless outsoles I have ever seen. The H5 outsole is designed to be more of an all-day shoe, suitable for wearing to and from the course, but the traction remains very good. On closely mown links tees in early-morning dew, the grip was completely secure with zero slippage. On wet fairways, slopes, and around greens, the shoe held firm.

The traction is not quite at the level of the H4's more aggressive pattern, and in truly extreme conditions, a spiked shoe or the H4 would provide more confidence. But for the vast majority of playing conditions, including soft winter rounds, the H5's outsole is more than adequate. The trade-off for slightly less extreme grip is a sole that is comfortable to walk on for hours and does not chew up greens.

Waterproofing & Durability

This is where the Biom H5 excels beyond almost anything else on the market. The ECCO-TEX waterproof membrane, which is Ecco's proprietary alternative to GORE-TEX, wraps the entire lower portion of the shoe without a bottom seam. The 3-year waterproof warranty is the longest I have encountered in golf footwear, and it reflects genuine confidence in the construction.

In testing through rain, wet grass, and standing water, my feet stayed completely dry. The leather upper repels moisture effectively, and the seamless membrane construction means there are simply no entry points for water. This is the shoe I reach for when the forecast looks grim.

Durability is equally impressive. Ecco shoes have always lasted well in my experience, but the H5 takes it further. The leather shows minimal wear after multiple rounds, and a scuff mark almost adds character to the shoe rather than detracting from it. These are shoes that look better with use. Cleaning requires nothing more than drying them off and giving an occasional wipe. The low-maintenance nature of the H5 is a genuine advantage for golfers who play frequently and do not want to fuss with shoe care.

Verdict

The Ecco Biom H5 is an outstanding golf shoe for a specific type of golfer: someone who walks every round, plays in all weather, values durability and comfort above all else, and appreciates a shoe that will last for years rather than seasons. The 3-year waterproof warranty is unmatched, the comfort is excellent after a brief settling-in period, the ground feel is natural and connected, and the construction quality justifies the premium price when amortized over the shoe's lifespan.

The weaknesses are tied to its identity. The style is polarizing, and golfers who prefer classic or fashion-forward aesthetics will not be won over. The shoe is better suited for the course than the clubhouse, despite Ecco's claim of all-day versatility. The break-in experience, while likely uncommon, was the one surprise for a brand known for instant comfort. And the traction, while very good, has taken a small step back from the more aggressive H4 outsole.

For the walker, the foul-weather golfer, and the player who values their shoes lasting three to five years, the Biom H5 is one of the best investments in golf footwear you can make.
